Centennial High School is one of New Mexico's newest high schools, opening it's doors to its students for the first time during the 2012-2013 academic year. Our name is a celebration of the centennial, or 100th anniversary, of our statehood. During our short history with the Las Cruces Public Schools, the Centennial High School Symphony Orchestra has won the NMAA State Orchestra Contest Championship in the Symphony Division four times in a row.
The Centennial High School Symphony and Chamber String Orchestras, under the direction of Mr. Daniel Rivera, have received Superior ratings in the Southwest New Mexico Educators Association Music Performance Assessment Festival in concert and sight reading consistently since the school opened in 2012. The CHS Symphony was selected as the 2016 NMMEA Honor Orchestra for the New Mexico Music Educators Association All State Festival and In Service Conference.
The New Mexico Music Educators Association has selected Centennial High School Orchestra as the 2019 NMMEA Honor Orchestra. A panel of three judges from outside New Mexico in a blind audition has recommended our group as their choice to perform at the 2019 NMMEA All State Music Festival and In-Service Conference in Albuquerque. The performance will be on Thursday, January 10, 2019 in Popejoy Hall at the University of New Mexico.
The Symphony Orchestra
The Symphony is a full orchestra made up of strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion - it is an award winning orchestra that performs high level symphonic works like "Danzon No. 2" by Marquez, "Mars, the Bringer of War" from the Planets by Holst, "Hoe Down" from Rodeo by Copland, "Finlandia" by Sibelius and many more.
The Chamber Orchestra
A string orchestra (violins, violas, cellos, and basses) with piano comprised from the 10th, 11th, and 12th advance orchestra students that have ranked Runner Up, Third, and Fourth Place in the very competitive NMAA State Contest in the string division the last three years.
The Concert Orchestra
The Concert Orchestra is a Ninth Grade only string orchestra that performs in the Fall Concert and Winter Concert. These students have the opportunity to perform in the Symphony Orchestra by audition for the Winter Concert, MPA, and State Competitions. Concert Orchestra students will receive introduction to three octave scales, vibrato, right and left hand technique.
The Camerata Ensemble
A year round small group that performs in every school concert, performances for community luncheons, dinners, award celebrations, and many other fund raising performances. These students get instruction on all string instruments and eventually get to perform on an instrument other than their principal instrument.
